Created as a personal project, Separated was a way for Sabrina Kauk to play around with digital photo manipulation in a way her assignments wouldn’t allow her. After coming across a building while walking around the Ryerson University campus, she thought it would be a good canvas to practice her skills.

Kauk enjoys taking photos and putting them into surreal spaces, combining photography and digital illustration to create a new piece. In the case of Separated, she wanted the piece to speak on the Earth’s future and the idea that we will need to find new living spaces as resources run out and environments change.

“[One] thing I have learned from my program is having a message in your work: can you talk about it? What does it mean to you? What does it mean to others?” Kauk explained.
