An Upwards Trail was a spur of the moment passion project for Matthew Oliveira. He’s been fortunate enough to travel to many destinations over the last year, and this photography series captures the beauty of the Pīpīwai Trail in Maui, Hawaii, serving as a reminder of his amazing experiences during the trip.

Desiring to branch out from typical travel photography, Oliveira tries to find a way to make his pictures unique. A lesson the Ryerson media production program teaches him is how much extra effort will do for your work creatively, and he remembers to apply that mentality in order to make his work stand out. 

“Whether it be shooting through something, playing with a longer exposure, or shooting straight up, adding a new flare of interest through a creative choice is what keeps photography fresh and interesting for me,” said Oliveira.
